And I have a process for helping students find their story, and their unique voice.

It starts with a conversation.

I spend time with each student, asking a series of questions designed to elicit those golden nuggets that make for a poignant, distinctive essay. More importantly, I help young people discover what makes them special, and get them excited about sharing that with the world.

I then guide students into developing a narrative arc, and support them in creating those first drafts. We hone each iteration, until they end up with the perfect essay: one that, if it fell on the floor of their high school without their name on it, someone might pick up and know who it belongs to.

The complete package.

Many colleges ask for additional statements, and students may need to write a dozen or more smaller essays in addition to the big one. I help them choose which prompts to answer, find creative ways to repurpose their writing across multiple schools (why write 12 separate essays when you may only need to write four or five?), and ensure that they are sharing a full picture of who they are and what they have to offer each campus. (This is where that initial conversation comes in handy! We have a lot of material to draw from.)

More than college prep.

My goal is for each student to find joy in the storytelling process and feel proud of what they have created. Ultimately, my students gain writing skills that will serve them well past the college application experience and into adulthood.
